UAB Šalčininkai Žuvininkystės Ūkis, founded in 1966, is a business with a long tradition in Šalčininkai district, Tribonii km. The fish farm started as one of the most productive fish farms in Lithuania and has remained an important part of the fishing industry ever since.
The Šalčininkai State Fishery Farm, privatised thirty years ago and headed by Algimantas Gylys, has become perhaps the most productive company of its kind in Lithuania. Over the years, the farm’s territory has evolved, and nowadays it covers an area of more than 340 hectares of ponds and about 700 hectares of cultivated land.
The strategic goal of JSC “Šalčininkai Fisheries Farm” is to continuously develop and improve the fish breeding and rearing business and to secure a strong position in the Lithuanian market. The company aims to comply with national and European Union standards, produce high quality products, increase productivity, reduce production costs and increase profitability. The aquaculture and agricultural aspects of farming are closely linked. The farm grows its own feed for fish.
Šalčininkai Fisheries Farm, UAB is implementing a project on the continuation of nature management in the territory of Šalčininkai Fisheries Farm, UAB under the measure “Promotion of environmentally sustainable, resource efficient, innovative, competitive and knowledge-based aquaculture”, “Environmentally sustainable aquaculture with environmental functions”.
The aim of the management plan is to maintain an optimal environment for open habitat bird species and to reduce the negative impact of the functioning of the ponds on the ecosystems of the associated rivers and catchments.
